Our Responsibility Toward Elders:
The Scriptures make it clear that we have an obligation toward elders.
These responsibilities may be summarized as follows:
We are to obey them (Heb. 13:17)
17 Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.
We are to respect them (1 Thess. 5:13; 1 Tim. 5:1)
13 Hold them in the highest regard
in love because of their work.
Live in peace with each other.
1 Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers,
We are to protect them from unfounded charges (1 Tim. 5:9-10)
9 No widow may be put on the list of widows unless she is over sixty, has been faithful to her husband,10 and is well known for her good deeds, such as bringing up children, showing hospitality, washing the feet of the Lord’s people, helping those in trouble and devoting herself to all kinds of good deeds.
We are to remember them and imitate them (Heb. 13:7)
7 Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.
We are to remunerate them (1 Tim. 5:17-18). Not just those who are “full-time” but the others as well.
17 The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching.18 For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,(”a) and
“The worker deserves his wages.(”b)
